Introduction

The Aristotle Foundation for Public Policy considers the protection of your personal information and your privacy to be critically important.

In order for the Foundation to interact with those who voluntarily interact with us via email sign-ups on our website or elsewhere, including signing petitions or donating to the Foundation, and to manage our relationship with you, we may need to collect, store, use, and disclose some of your personal information. We developed this privacy policy to inform you of the manner in which your personal information will be collected, used and disclosed. This Privacy Policy applies to the Foundation and our website.

Personal Information: Collection and Usage

We will only collect, use and disclose your personal information as permitted by law. We collect personal information primarily to communicate with you, such as your email address, if you choose to provide it to us by signing up for Foundation emails, if you donate, or if you sign a petition. As per notifications on the same, those are noted at the bottom of our emails, donation forms and website, and petitions. An unsubscribe option is provided at the bottom of every email.

We also gather certain statistical information about how users access and use our website, such as location, IP address, and the pages accessed during a session, to help us understand how people use our website, and to identify technical or usability problems with it. We collect this information to help us improve our website. We do not retain this statistical information in a way which identifies you personally.

We use “cookies” on our website. A cookie is a file that stores a small amount of data on your device and assists in gathering the statistical information referred to above. Our website uses anonymous cookies. You can manage or disable cookies at any time by adjusting your browser settings.

Unless otherwise required or permitted by law or unless otherwise set out in this Privacy Policy as per below, we only collect your personal information directly from you. On occasion for fundraising purposes, we do contract with direct mail providers for personal information of prospective donors. Such providers obtain their names and address from publicly available sources—primarily the white pages, which they cross reference with other publicly available sources, such as elections disclosures, to identify people we think may be interested in the work that we do. If you do not wish to be contacted by such providers and have received a letter in the mail from us via such providers, notify us and we will remove you from their mailing list. When you donate to the Foundation via such providers, the information then is retained by the provider and by the Foundation and all such personal information is subject to our Privacy Policy. We do not sell such private information.

Use

We will use personal information you provide for purposes consistent with the reason provided to us, and after notification, we will only use your email address to communicate with you, and we will use statistical data to help improve our website. We retain your personal information for as long as is necessary to conduct our communications with you where desired, to manage our relationship with you, i.e., where necessary to send tax receipts, and for other essential purposes, such as complying with our legal obligations.

Disclosure

We may engage service providers to assist us in our activities, including information technology service providers. It may be necessary for us to disclose your personal information to these providers in some circumstances, i.e., emails with an email service provider. If we provide personal information to such providers, we will require that they protect the information in the same manner as we do. These service providers may not use your personal information for any purpose other than the reason you provided it to us. They also may not share or sell such information.

In certain circumstances we may disclose your personal information without obtaining your further consent, where it is permitted or required by law—for example, to comply with legislation or at the request of investigative authorities.

Of note, we do not sell or share your personal information with third parties outside of the above-noted exceptions which are solely focused on communicating with you about Aristotle Foundation activities, research, education, events, and donations.
